Kaci Ann Mellen known by those who know her best as Grammy Kaci of Edna, Kansas passed away on January 4, 2019 at her home with her family by her side.
Kaci was born on September 20, 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska the first of ten children to Bettie (Pangle) Clements. Kaci’s childhood as a military brat gave her and her siblings the opportunity to see much of the world as they were never in one place for too long. After high school she continued her education at Creighton University where she majored in Respiratory Therapy. Kaci made Coffeyville her home in 1979 where she quickly became instrumental in founding the Emergency Medical Services at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. She also began teaching EMT/Paramedic courses for the hospital until founding the courses at Coffeyville Community College where she was the instructor for over 25 years up to her retirement in 2006. It was during one of her classes in 1990 that she met Curtis Mellen, the couple was together for over 10 years when they made their unwavering love for one another legal on paper when they were married on July 19, 2001. You would never earn the name Grammy Kaci without the grandchildren, her pride and joy other than her QUILTING. Kaci loved being Grammy and she loved quilting, dedicating a full room of the house specifically for her beloved hobby. Kaci was outgoing, strong-willed, always there for everybody, and no matter what was going on she was going to feed you, even if you weren’t hungry she was going to feed you.
Kaci’s memories will live on with her husband Curtis Mellen, daughter Tanya Gath her husband Erik, brothers, Kevin Clements, David Clements, and Donald Clements, sisters, Peggy Clements, JoAnne Ziegler, Bonita Rouse, Theresa Carr, and Mary Clements, Grandchildren, Zack Pearson, Joely Gath, and Summer Stimpson, great-grandchildren, Olyvia Pearson and Lane Pearson, many, many nieces and nephews, and her two dogs Lucy and Ginger.

Kaci was an inspiration to everyone that went through her Paramedic Program at Coffeyville Community College. An awesome, one of a kind instructor, that put her heart into making sure each of us knew how to treat a patient with class, dignity and the standard of care that only her program could exceed at. The world has lost a very special lady....the heavens have gained a bright shining star. May you rest in the arms of Jesus Kaci Adams Mellen, you will be missed.

Kaci you will be missed by all. I remember the early days of EMS program at CCC, taking equipment off the trucks to have class. You have a legacy that cannot be matched. And we ran some amazing calls back then. Say hello to Jay, Lyle, Marilyn. Just don't forget to unplug the unit when you leave:) Take care Curtis and Tanya my heart is with you.

Kaci was a true dinosaur in Kansas EMS! having participated in development of the EMT/MICT paths for training for the whole state. One of my best friends threw out my career and a great resource for her students thru all her classes, Many of the early training programs were driven by the experiences shared by the original group of Instructors of which she was one, Miss her a great deal and prayers are being said for her family and students who understand her greatness in the EMS field.
