Barbara Jean Haynes, a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.
Born on October 8, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas, Barbara was the daughter of Denzil Erwin and Sylvia Mary (Monday) Menefee. She cherished her role as the eldest sister to Janet, who preceded her in death on March 25, 2025. The two shared a special bond, living together later in life and enjoying activities such as bowling, where their personalities complemented each other—Janet's competitive spirit paired with Barbara's quiet but social nature.
Barbara grew up in Coffeyville where she also graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School. As a young woman Barbara met the love of her life, Roy G. Haynes. Their introduction came through a mutual friend, and after just six weeks of courtship, they were married on October 1, 1977. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Angela, and Barbara embraced Roy’s children, Andy, Lynne, and Steve as her own. Tragically, Roy passed away on August 23, 1996 and son Steve Haynes just this past February.
Throughout her career in healthcare, Barbara worked diligently in various roles including medical transcription and records management at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, as well as positions at Talladega Hospital in Alabama, Chanute Hospital, and Mercy in Independence, before retiring from CRMC.
A quiet and content individual, Barbara’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She found happiness in reading, listening to country and gospel music, and supporting the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, along with the Kansas City Chiefs. Barbara recently moved to Topeka to live with her daughter Angela and her family, where they shared meaningful moments together. She loved watching her grandsons perform in the various music ensembles they are a part of, going to Kansas City to watch jazz musicians, and going on road trips, most recently this past June to Alabama.
Barbara loved her God and always looked for His love and purpose in all things. Her daughter remembers her mother taking meals to shut-ins, and always finding a way to bring light to others. As she grew older she would send cards to others since she wasn’t able to go see them in person as easily. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville. When she moved to live with her daughter in Topeka, she attended Topeka First United Methodist Church nearly every Sunday. She had just finished a bible study two weeks before she passed and she loved the new connections and community she found in that church.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Angela Langley and her husband Kelly, step-children Andy Haynes and his wife Charlotte, and Lynne Covington and her husband Leon. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Cheryl Bragg, Chrissy Covington-Goulart, Heath Miller, Isaac Langley, and Lucas Langley, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.
A funeral service to honor Barbara's life will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 2 PM at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, located at 2405 Woodland Ave., in Coffeyville. Pastor Brad Wheeler from the 1st United Methodist Church of Topeka will officiate. Friends and family are invited to gather from 1 PM until the time of service at the chapel. Barbara will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Roy, in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request gifts in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, which was a charity that she supported for years or Midland’s Hospice House as they took such great care of her and her family in her final days.
