Elvin Wood

Elvin “Lynn” Wood age 93 passed away at his home in Coffeyville, Kansas on Tuesday, August 23, 2022.

Lynn was born on August 1, 1929, in Grainola, Kansas to Henry Lawton and Lois May (Crozier) Wood.  He was one of seven children.  The family relocated to the Cedar Vale, Kansas area where he graduated from Cedar Vale High School.  Lynn played and lettered in Basketball and still today basketball was his favorite sport to watch.  He spent many summers hauling hay and enjoying other outdoor activities like hunting and especially fishing.

When Lynn worked his way up to department store manager position while working for Montgomery Wards, TG&Y, Gibson’s and finally Wal-Mart from where he retired.  He began his working days at 19 years of age at Woolworth Department Store.  It was while working at a Woolworths that he met a coworker by the name of Lorene, the two began dating, fell in love and on September 16, 1948, they were united in marriage.  The Couple shared 70+ years of marriage together. They were blessed with five children, four sons and a daughter.

Lynn moved his family all across the surrounding states, making stops in Nebraska, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma and finally making Coffeyville home.  After making Coffeyville home he and his wife purchased Scarlett’s Hallmark Store.  Lorene had always dreamed of owning a bookstore, though Scarlett’s wasn’t a bookstore it did bring much pleasure to his wife. Retirement wasn’t something Lynn was ready for, so he began working at Platner’s Welding Supply until just short of his 70th birthday.  He then began driving for Meals on Wheels providing a little conversation to those he dropped a meal off to.

Every summer Lynn, Lorene and their children vacationed at Beaver Lake.  Lynn purchased an old school bus and converted it into a motorhome for his family.  Often, they would extend the invitation to family and friends to join them on their 2 weeklong summer vacations. Lynn loved to fish; his family is convinced that is why they vacationed on one of the best lakes around.  They cherish all the memories and time they spent together camping and have many, many stories to share of those days. One memory is of their Dad water skiing, they wanted it to be known he did wear a life jacket but, he started from the shore and would end at the shore because he didn’t know how to swim and remarkably, he never fell.

Lynn walked every day, always picking up trash, cans and many treasures others would pass by. He and his brother Wayne could be found scouting out all the auctions in the area looking for priceless treasures to collect and save for something they might need them for.  One man's junk becomes another man’s treasure to share and to pass on to others.

Lynn’s most valuable treasure in life was his wife, Lorene who preceded him in death on June 13, 2019, and his surviving children and their families who will miss their Dad dearly. Cherishing their Dad with such love and admiration is Jay Wood, Lawton Wood his wife Audrey, Chuck Wood his wife-Sharon, Nancy Williams her husband Ken and Terry Wood his wife-Kay; and at best count, 28 grandchildren, 74 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; as well as numerous, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.  In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Wilbur Wood, Pauline Wood, Delbert Wood, Manerva Beaver, Wayne Wood, Elaine Wert, and grandsons, Bryce Wood, and Arlo Hill.

Graveside memorial services will be held on September 10, 2022, at 11 am at the Kellyville City Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to the love of his life, Lorene in Kellyville, Oklahoma.  The family has requested memorial contributions be made payable to the CRMC Foundation Care and Share Program for cancer patients in need of assistance.  The services will be available for viewing at www.fordwulfbrunschapel.com where you may also leave an online condolence or share a memory.
