Ernest Leonard Smith, 96, formerly of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Ernest was born on August 28, 1918 in Elliott, Oklahoma to James and Ollie (Walker) Smith. He grew up in rural Elliott where he attended class at an old country School House. Ernest served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a Staff Sergeant when he was honorably discharged in 1945.

On May 10, 1959 he married Wilma Louise Stimson in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Tulsa where they raised their four young sons, before moving to South Coffeyville, Oklahoma in 1972. Ernest worked as a machinist for Funk Manufacturing for many years. He was a farmer, raised cattle and other livestock and tended to his garden. Most of all he enjoyed the time he spent with his family.

Surviving to honor his memory are his loving wife, Wilma of the home; sons, Dale Smith and wife Susan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Floyd Smith and wife Debbie of Coffeyville, Kansas, Neal Smith of Pittsburg, Kansas; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ollie; son, Marvin Lee Smith; brothers and sisters, Alphie, Alice, Lester, Walter, Jess, Alvin, Irvin, Opal, Howard and Vera.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel in Coffeyville, Kansas. Pastor Roger Huff will officiate. Burial will follow at Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 9, 2015 at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family will greet friends Monday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions can be made payable to the Alzheimer's Association 1820 E Douglas Ave. Wichita, Kansas 67214; these may also be left with the funeral home.
