He attended the rural Sunnyside School up until moving to California where he began working odd jobs. He moved back to Havana where he married Elinor Thompson on November 23, 1947 in Havana. The couple was blessed with a son and two daughters. They made their home in Wichita where he found employment with Boeing, he later opened a barber shop, and then started driving a big rig. He met Patsy Smith Clark and they joined each other in marriage on June 24, 1995. They made South Coffeyville their home and later settled in Nowata.

Dale spent some of his free time woodworking and enjoyed playing his guitar any chance he could get. He belonged to the Old Time Kansas Pickers and Fiddlers.
