Hazel Marie Hunigan, resident of Medicalodges on Midland, passed from this life into the presence of her Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, April 7, 2023, in Coffeyville, Kansas.
Hazel Marie Hunigan was born in Muldrow, Oklahoma. She moved to Coffeyville, Kansas with her parents, Tom and Ada (Bryant) Hunigan and family at the request of her father’s brother, Dennis Hunigan, who owned a family grocery store and wanted his brother to help him. They moved next door to the store, and she continued to live in Coffeyville excluding a few years until their death. She had 7 siblings (Alice, Irene, Mary E, Curtis, Ernest and Sylenthius Hunigan).
Hazel attended schools in Coffeyville and graduated in the class of 1942. She enjoyed being with her family and friends. She joined the Calvary Baptist Church at an early age. She played the piano for the church and choir for over 50 plus years.
Her basic enjoyment was just being with her family and being around her nieces and nephews.
She loved coming to Topeka, Kansas to visit with her niece Doris and her husband Charles and their family. She also enjoyed visiting with other relatives, especially riding the train to Detroit, Michigan, and California. She lived in California for several years but returned to Coffeyville to help her mother.
Hazel loved to play the piano, in addition to playing at church she would bless her family by playing and singing during her visits. When she wasn’t playing the piano, she was working on a picture puzzle.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory are her numerous nieces, nephews those that remained closest to her were Doris, Dorothy, Betty, Judy, Helen, Howard, Mary Jo, Willie Katherine, Curtis Jr. and Frankie Mae, several cousins, and friends. Her memory will always be in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, nieces Willie Katherine, Frankie Mae, and nephew Curtis Jr.
Her kindness, concern for others and deep willingness to help others will never be forgotten.
Funeral services celebrating her home going will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville, Kansas at 11am. The family and friends will gather for a viewing from 10am until service time. Hazel will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery following the service.
