Irene Widmer

Longtime Coffeyville resident Irene Widmer, 99, died Saturday, June 16, in Meriden, Kansas.

She was born November 21, 1918, Irene Jewel Getzendaner, in Dover, Oklahoma, to Eugene Reese Getzendaner and Gertie Mabel (Williams) Getzendaner. Early in her childhood, Irene moved with her family to Oswego, Kansas, where she attended schools and graduated high school.

She married Richard Duane Widmer October 13, 1940. After criss-crossing the country with her husband during his stint in the Army, the couple settled in Coffeville where they raised their family.

Irene's passion was golf and she scored two "holes in one" after her 70th birthday. She was active in Hillcrest's Women's Golf Association, often representing her club at SEK tournaments. She was an avid gardener, with beautiful flowers and gardens adorning her home.

Travel was another of her passions and she visited Germany and Austria with her sister to meet other Getzendaner family members in their homeland.

Irene is survived by her daughter Kim Driesbach and husband, Chuck; sons, Richard Widmer, Jr., and wife Ann, Apache Junction, AZ; and David Widmer, Topeka. She is also survived by grandchildren Elizabeth Olivier, Durango, CO; Timothy Widmer, Steamboat Springs, CO; Lindsey Castrogiovanni, Costa Mesa, CA; Kate Naulls, Houston, TX; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; sister Clara Smith and brothers Roy Getzendaner and E R Getzendaner.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. Interment will immediately follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends an hour prior to service time. Donations in Irene's name may be sent to Ford-Wulf-Bruns for the American Cancer Society.
