James Battaglear

Life-long Coffeyville resident and native son James E. Battaglear Sr., 87, passed away on the evening of Feb. 23, 2017, at the St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, OK.

Mr. Battaglear was born Oct. 24, 1929 in Coffeyville, Kansas, to John Frank Battaglear and Elizabeth Irene (Creason) Battaglear. James was known for his unmatched commitment to his work, selfless and caring nature, and his ability to always take life in stride; regardless of what came his way. Early in life, James would work for the Coffeyville Ice Plant before choosing to serve in the United States Army where he worked in the motor pool. During this time, while in Chicago, IL he met Dorothy Ruth Clawson who he later married in Chicago on August 13, 1953. Upon his discharge and return to Coffeyville in 1953, James and his brother Frank started Battaglear Concrete, where he worked until his retirement 3 years ago. James would also work for Faddler Wholesale, Junge Bakery, and retired from Holsum Bakery in the coming years. A member of the American Legion and the Teamsters Union where he was a local representative for many years, James took great pride in the concrete work he did in Coffeyville, and the surrounding areas in Kansas and Oklahoma.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 24 siblings, and his son James Edward Battaglear Jr.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of 63 years, his 3 daughters Marjorie Keys (Wann, OK), Vicky Usher (Lenapah, OK), Bonnie Grundy (Coffeyville, KS), 13 Grandchildren, many Great Grandchildren, 2 sisters Rosie Mcnutt (Downey, CA), Juanita Battaglear (Wichita,KS), and 1 brother Paul Crandall (Coffeyville, KS).
