James Edward Clark-Matthews, better known as “Grip” aka “Big Cat,” was born on March 23, 1981, in Tunica, Mississippi, to James Matthews and Sallery (Clark) Matthews.

James was a man whose presence was larger than life. Though he was a big man in stature, his heart was even bigger. He was known for his strength, generosity, and the love he carried for his family, and unwavering protection.

From a young age, James had a determination and drive that were uniquely his own. He was always going to find a way. If there was a dollar to be made, James was going to figure out how to make it. He carried a natural hustle, a strong work ethic, and a desire to provide that followed him throughout his life.

He always presented his best self, passing this down to his children. As a child, he loved his cowboy boots, and you rarely saw him without them. Even as a child, he had a style all his own. That confidence and individuality were a part of James from the very beginning.

Family was always an important part of James’ life. He shared a special bond with his siblings, NeKeisha and Termaine, built through a lifetime of memories, and experiences that only siblings share. Their connection was a cherished part of his journey and a reminder of the family who loved him from the very beginning.

At the age of ten, James accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in Coffeyville, Kansas. His faith remained an important part of his journey and helped shape the man he was.

Those who knew James knew there were two sides to him. He was the gentle giant with a heart as big as his presence, a teddy bear to the people he loved. But he was also the grizzly bear: strong, protective, and fearless when it came to defending and providing for his family. Both sides were uniquely James, and both came from the same place, a heart that loved deeply.

James’ journey through life included seasons of challenge, growth, and change. But his story was defined by his ability to grow, overcome, and become the man he was meant to be. His journey was one of resilience, redemption, and transformation.

Part of his transformation was becoming an NCCO certified crane operator. James found great pride in his work and his newfound brotherhood with the IBEW. He was a true craftsman who was known for his speed, precision, and skill. He took pride in what he did and earned the respect of those who worked alongside him.

James was a private and humble man. He was low-key but he had a smile that was unforgettable. He found joy in the simple things—a soulful, home-cooked meal, time spent with family, and moments with “his folks.” Those were some memories he treasured most.

In 2010, in a small world, he found love in a familiar family friend, Mickole. They welcomed their two boys, Major and Maverick which completed their blended family. After 10 years together, on September 7, 2019, James and Mickole were united in marriage. Together, they shared a beautiful life built on love in Owasso, Oklahoma. Their journey reflected endurance through every season, and a bond that could never be broken.

James was blessed with children who each held a special place in his heart: Jameshia (Tate) Matthews, his first born and first true love. Tiffany Eden, Zyaria Clark, Jj Clark, Tayah Morgan, Major Clark-Matthews, and Maverick Clark-Matthews. He was also blessed with two bonus children, MiKàya Fulcher and Marquis Fulcher, and his granddaughter, MiKàylei, whom he called “Sheeky.”

James’ journey as a father was one of growth and love. He cherished the memories made with his children and took pride in the family he helped to build. He was a protector and provider, and he found some of his greatest joy watching his boys play sports. He loved deeply and gave generously to those he called family.

He was a proud uncle of Keshondriek Matthews, Sahni Martin, and Kendall Luxama, his half sister, Megan Luxama. James also cherished many laughs and memories with his extended family and lifelong best friend Fred McDaniel.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, James and Sallery Matthews. His brother, Brian Smith. His paternal grandparents Irby C and Pearline Matthews. And maternal grandparents Nathaniel and Beulah Hollins.

James Edward Clark-Matthews leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, perseverance, and transformation. He will be remembered as a man who worked hard, loved deeply, protected fiercely, and left an impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be missed immensely.

James' family will honor his memory with a celebration of life service on Friday, August 7, 2026, with Pastor Melvin Simpson starting at 11:00 a.m. sharp at First Church of God in Christ, located at 2802 W 1st St, in Coffeyville, Ks. James will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery. Flowers and memorial contributions may be left in the care of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel.
