Jay Dee Wood, born on November 28, 1948, in Eldorado, Kansas, to Elvin "Lynn" and Margie Lorene (Ross) Wood passed away on June 30,2024, in Coffeyville, Kansas. He was a proud veteran who dedicated his life to serving his country. After graduating from Winfield High School in Winfield, Kansas, Jay enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War choosing his branch of service.
Jay's commitment to his country was unwavering, he not only served one tour but reenlisted for a second tour which ended after receiving injuries sustained while escaping enemy fire by jumping from a helicopter without a parachute. His resilience and bravery were commendable, and he felt it was an honor to protect and serve his nation as a Special Forces Airborne Ranger.
Following his military service, Jay pursued education and training to be an Electronics Technician at the technical school in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Although he initially enjoyed working with his hands, health issues eventually led him to transition into managing convenience stores. Despite the change, Jay continued to approach his work with dedication and diligence until his health no longer allowed him to continue.
Among his hobbies and interests, Jay found solace in fishing and crafting custom ink pens out of wood, deer antlers, and colored acrylics. He was known for showering others with these beautifully crafted pens as expressions of love and appreciation. Jay's kind-hearted nature extended beyond gifts; he was perceived as rough and rugged but had a tender heart. He would selflessly offer help to those in need and never shy away from showing kindness through words of affirmation.
In addition to his military service and career achievements, Jay's family meant the world to him. He is survived by 6 children, Renee, Shane, Sean, Jennifer, McKayla, and Brandon, his siblings Lawton Wood, Chuck Wood (Sharon), Nancy Williams (Ken), and Terry Wood (Kay), special friend who cared for him until his dying day Kristy Walton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
