John Charles Barnes, 59, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026 in his Coffeyville, Kansas home.
John was born February 13, 1967 in Blythe, CA. He was honored to join the Air Force in June 1985 and was honorably discharged in July 1988. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and married his sweetheart, Bonnie South in the Oklahoma City Temple in June 2006. In 2009 he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Catholic University in Washington, DC. A die-hard Steelers fan, John also loved woodworking, NASCAR, and hockey. He was quick with a joke or a laugh, and he enjoyed spending time with family, including his dog, Laurel and two cats, Peanut and Shadow.
John is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Edward Barnes. He is survived by his mother, Ione (Minnie) Shearer; his brothers, Ryan Barnes (Starla and Frankie) and James Dietrich; and sister, Skye (Summer and Jesse).
His services where held in Independence, Kansas on June 6, 2026. He will be dearly missed.
John’s finally at peace—out of a broken body and out of a cycle of being broke.
We’re glad for him, but it should come as no surprise he didn’t have a hidden nest egg somewhere to facilitate his quiet exit. In lieu of flowers those who feel so inclined may contribute to the unexpected costs of his services, and/or rehoming of his pets at JohnBarnesMemorial on Venmo.
