John W Smith, 90, of Edna, Kansas passed away in his home in Edna, Kansas on Tuesday August 26, 2025.
He was born June 4, 1935 at Edna, Kansas to Albert and Hester (Mc Elroy) Smith. He grew up and attended school in Edna and graduated from Edna High School in 1953. Following high school, he served in the US Army stationed in Long Island, NY.
On July 12, 1964, he was united in marriage to Carol A Muir. Following their marriage, they made their home and raised their family in the rural Edna, Kansas area where they farmed and raised cattle and hogs.
John loved visiting with neighbors and telling stories to family and friends. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. He also enjoyed playing cards, particularly Rook and Pitch where he often schooled family members in the finer points of card playing.
John was very dedicated to his community, serving on the Volunteer Fire Department, Water Board, Township trustee, Fair Board and 4H leader for a number of years.
Survivors include two sons: Tim Smith of Drumright, OK and Chris (Judy) Smith of Edna, KS; one daughter: Susan (Brian) Charles of Hot Springs, AR.
Six Grandchildren: John (Neli) Charles, Katie Charles, Lauren Charles, Ryan (Kelsie) Smith, Blaine Smith and Aidan Smith.
John was proceeded in death by his wife Carol, brothers William Smith, Pete Lackey and Joe Lackey, parents Albert and Hester.
Funeral services will be held at Elm Christian Church, 4055 Lyon Road, Edna, Kansas, on Saturday August 30, 2025 at 10 am, Pastor Alan Banzet will be officiating. Interment will follow at Elm Grove cemetery north of Edna. The family will greet friends on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave. in Coffeyville, Kansas from 5 to 7pm The family requests all memorial contributions made in John’s memory be payable to Harry Hynes Hospice and they may be left in care of the chapel.
