Lewis Barnett

Lewis Wayne Barnett, 86, of Dearing, Kansas, died Sunday July 20, 2014 in Windsor Place Assisted Living in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Born in Plattsburg, Missouri on April 18, 1928, Wayne is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Mathes Barnett. Surviving children include Patricia Rank of Elkhart, IN, Larry Barnett of Tulsa, OK, and David Barnett. Wayne was preceded in death by son, Stephen Barnett. A surviving sister, Delores Tate, resides in Gower, Missouri.

Wayne was a proud grandpa to eight grandkids and several greatgrandkids. Wayne was also a great friend to many who lived in the Coffeyville and Dearing communities.

Many people recognized Wayne as the friendly butcher behind the counter at Safeway in Coffeyville for nearly two decades. He was proud of his service in the United States Air Force and was always showing his support for his favorite baseball team the Kansas City Royals or St. Louis Cardinals whichever team was doing better at the time.

Never one to sit still for long, Wayne enjoyed a variety of activities that included bowling, hunting, fishing, metal detecting, and an occasional round of golf. Over the years, Wayne acquired some interesting collections that consisted of Avon Bottles, clocks of every size and shape, rare coins, and sports cards.

Family paid their last respects to Wayne on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in a private ceremony, under the direction of FordWulfBruns Chapel. The family has requested memorials be made to the St. Jude Childrens Hospital and can be left with the funeral home. To leave the family a special message on www.fordwulfbrunschapel.com
