LORRENCE ALGER MAHAFFY Age 87, of Coffeyville, Kansas died early Thursday morning, August 5, 2004 at his home. Mr. Mahaffy was born December 12, 1916, in Tyro, Kansas, to Alger Henry and Margaret Jane Folkers Mahaffy. He attended school in Tyro and McKinley Grade School, in Coffeyville and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1934. As a student, he sold Pollys Popcorn in Coffeyville for the Lunbergs after school and on Saturdays and also worked as a janitor at the Roosevelt Junior High School for several years. He graduated from Coffeyville Junior College in 1937. In 1936 he began working for the United States Postal Service in the Coffeyville Post Office. He began as a special delivery carrier, later becoming a regular route carrier and inside clerk before advancing to a supervisory position. Following 37 years of employment with the postal service, Mr. Mahaffy retired in 1973. On January 30, 1938 he married Mary Jewell Robb in Bartlesville, Oklahoma at the First Baptist Church Parsonage. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Coffeyville. On January 11, 1945, he entered the United States Navy, serving during World War II with the Fleet Post Office in Chicago and San Francisco. He was discharged October 24, 1945. He returned to the Coffeyville Post Office where he worked until retiring in June, 1973, as the Assistant Post Master. The Mahaffys traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and Mexico before and after retirement. He was a member of the First Christian Church; a member and past Commander of American Legion Post No. 20 for 59 years and was a Grand Chef Passe de Gare du Kansas 40 8 and of Local Voiture 186; and was presently serving as the Vice-President of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees NARFE. He was a former member of the National Federation of Post Office Clerks and the National Association of Postal Supervisors. He is survived by: His wife, Mary Jewell, of the home Two sons, L.A. Larry Mahaffy Jr., of Santa Clara, UT James Henry Mahaffy, of Coffeyville, KS One daughter, Mary Ann Freedle, of Coffeyville, KS One brother, John William Mahaffy, of Chanute, KS One sister, Louise Hutson, of Odessa, TX Five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Clausing. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 9, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel with burial in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, both of Coffeyville. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 9 a.m-8 p.m.; Sunday from 1-8 p.m., and Monday from 9 a.m.-noon. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church Building Fund or the American Legion Post No. 20 and Voiture 186 and may be left at the funeral home.
