Margaret Virginia Martin

Margaret Virginia Martin, aged 102, passed away on June 25th, 2024, at her home near Coffeyville, Kansas.

Margaret, also known as Peggy to family and friends, was born March 24th, 1922 to Steven E. and Irene (Kendrick) Fulton in Franklin, Texas. She was the middle child of seven born to the Fultons. (James, Pauline, Helen, Margaret, Imagoene, Roberta, and Betty). Margaret attended elementary and high school in Franklin, graduating in 1940. After high school, she moved to Bryan, Texas where she attended business school. Not long after the attack at Pearl Harbor, brought the U.S. into WW2, Margaret traveled to Washington D.C. to do her part for the war effort. While in Washington, she became a typist with top-secret clearance at the Pentagon, working mostly for multiple colonels but primarily for Colonel Tate. Each day after work, she would take a bus to the USO club where she also worked as a hostess. This is how she met her husband, Harland Martin. Before his deployment, he and Margaret were married and while he was stationed out of the country, she returned to Texas, where she worked in the charity ward of a Houston hospital. When the war ended and his service was completed, they moved to Coffeyville, Kansas, Harland’s hometown. It was in Coffeyville that they raised their family and made their home. Harland and Margaret co-owned multiple business ventures, including a construction company and a scrap metal business, for which Margaret kept the books.

Together they built a home where their family and friends could gather for holidays, special events, or swimming. Over the years, Margaret enjoyed multiple activities which included playing bridge, gardening, sewing, and canning. However, her favorite hobbies were spending time outside in her yard and shopping. She and Harland traveled extensively. They passed their love of travel down to their children and grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, and her husband Harland. She is survived by her children William Martin (Debby), Patty Harrington, and Lisa Ralph (Kenny), grandchildren Matthew Martin, Amanda Hainey (Adam), Jessica Martin-Krushinskie (Adam), Melissa Barnett (Jason), Brian Fisher, Daniel Fisher, Veronica Fisher, and Bradley Ralph. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren, Marley, Jacob, Maggie Barnett, Emma and Andrew Hainey, and Elenor Krushinskie.
