Melvin Alonzo (Bud) Betts, age 92, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Fredonia Memorial Hospital. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Bud was born on January 27, 1926 to Benjamin and Gertrude (Glenn) Betts in Loyal, OK. He attended school in Hennessey, OK then joined the Army and served with the Occupational Forces in Japan after WWII.

Bud married Irene Schafer on January 27, 1948 in Caney, KS. They recently celebrated their 70th anniversary. They have resided on the family farm west of Tyro all their married life.
Bud worked in the aeronautics industry, retiring from Rockwell International in Tulsa, OK in 1981.

He was part of the team that made the doors for America's first space shuttle. After retiring, he did independent carpentry work, raised cattle and took care of the family farm.

Bud is survived by his wife, Irene of the home; 4 children, Kathy (Dave) Bycroft of rural Caney, Karen (Tom) Jabben of rural Independence, Lon (Kim) Betts of rural Caney and Cindy (Kevin) Moyers of Ft. Scott, KS; 12 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, with the 3 more are due this year; also 2 nephews and 1 niece, several great nephews and nieces. Bud was preceded in death his parents, 2 sisters, 1 niece and 1 great nephew.

Bud was a member of the Tyro Christian Church where he served as an elder for many years, was instrumental in many of the building programs there and remembered the most for his 55 years of teaching Sunday School.

He enjoyed gardening, artifact hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He constantly had a new project in mind to do!

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 17, from 7-8 pm at the Tyro Christian Church and the Victory Service will be at 2pm on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Tyro Christian Church under the direction of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. Interment will follow at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney, KS, with full military honors. The family suggest memorial contributions be paid payable to the Lamplighters World Ministries, Stephen Bycroft Director. Contributions may be left in care of the chapel.
