Phyllis Thornbrough

Phyllis L. Metzger Thornbrough, 88, of Coffeyville, Ks. passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Windsor Place of Coffeyville, from complications following a severe stroke in late 2014. She was born to Eugene (Gene) and Hazel Metzger, August 20, 1927, on their farm in Kechi, Ks.

Phyllis married Herman A. Thornbrough on February 9, 1946 in Wichita, Ks. They moved to Coffeyville where she worked at Newberry's for 14 plus years. Their love of being around water took them to Grove, OK in 1968 where they spent many years living on Grand Lake. Phyllis returned to Coffeyville in 1997 upon the death of her husband.

Phyllis greatest joy was to prepare and host Thanksgiving dinner every year for family members. She started this tradition 39 years ago after her mother passed.

Phyllis was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she volunteered for numerous church functions. She spent hours decorating tables and serving beverages, and became known as the "tea" lady. She also spent time volunteering at the local Salvation Army. She was the sole survivor of Andover High School class of 1945. She loved and treated her nephew and nieces as her own children.

Phyllis is survived by her brother, Bob Metzger of Independence, Ks. and a sister-in-law, Jolene Metzger of Wichita, Ks. One nephew, Rocky Metzger of Neodesha, Ks., and two nieces, Roxanna (Monty) Friebel of Mansfield, OH and Gina Morris of Wichita, Ks., five great-nephews and one great niece, three great-great nephews and three great-great nieces and Jack Hill, devoted friend. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman.
