Richard Bauer

Richard Dean Bauer, resident of Coffeyville, KS passed away on Monday, July 2nd, 2018 at the age of 82 years at Windsor Place.

Born in Humboldt, KS but at an early age moved to Coffeyville where he attended school, graduating from Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1953.

Dean attended Coffeyville Community College for one year, then attended the University of Kansas, where he graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Pharmacy.

He began his pharmacist career at Marriott - Issacs in Coffeyville and then moved and worked in Arkansas City, KS for a short time. It wasn't long before he returned to his roots in Coffeyville to establish Layton-Bauer Drug in 1966. The store became Plaza Pharmacy in 1972 and it was in this location where Dean with his partner and friend, Spencer Evans-Lomb thrived for four decades. The two opened up a second store, Cherryvale Pharmacy, in 1976 located in Cherryvale, KS.

Dean took great pride in his work and tending to the needs of his patrons. Often times stepping away from holiday and family events to meet a patient at the Pharmacy, making sure they received and started their medications as soon as possible. His willingness and desire to take care of others was a trait his boys fondly respected.

Dean married Sharon Alvey and not long after they started their family by adopting son, Mitchell Dean in 1965 and later another son, Bradley Stuart in 1967. Years later, in 1978 they were blessed with a third son, Adam Chandler.

He was a pillar in the Coffeyville community; serving as Mayor at one time as well as various positions within the Jaycees' organization and the Coffeyville Interstate Fair and Rodeo committee. Dean also served in the Kansas Army National Guard.

His work and family were his life, but he would always make time for Kansas Jayhawk and Coffeyville Red Raven sports! He spent many evenings in his chair letting the referees know his disproval. Rock Chalk Jayhawk Deano!

He will be deeply missed by son Mitch, wife Kelli, son Brad, wife Terri; seven grandchildren, Chase, Jake, Brock, Jacob, Jimmy, Easton and Nick; and five great-grandchildren, Anthony, Jocelyn, Paige, Keltin and Bella; and many friends from over the years!

He was predeceased by son, Adam; brother, Jim and parents Rufus and Freda.
