Helen Sumpter

Helen Louise Sumpter 83, of Coffeyville, passed away December 18th, 2020, at Windsor Place.  Helen was born in Coffeyville, July 22, 1937 to Pleas and Eva Shamblin.  She attended Old Parker School.   One summer, walking down a road on her way home from a movie, her cousin was driving and seen her and told his friend with him in the car, I need to give my cousin a ride home.  Her cousin’s friend, Fred Sumpter became her husband and they were married on September 1953.   They were blessed with 3 children.  Later they divorced in 1964. Helen loved taking care of the elderly and her church.  If the church door was open, Helen was there to help wherever she was needed. Helen worked for Coffeyville Transportation and Windsor Place.

Helen’s memory will live on with her daughter, Martha and David Bond of Coffeyville.  Brother Johnny Shamblin of California, and grandchildren David Bond, Andover Kansas, Shyla Bond, Topeka, Calvin Sumpter, Portland Oregon, and Christina  Metzer, Portland Oregon 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.  She has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and church family and longtime caregiver and dear friend Carolyn Foster.

She now rests with her parents, son Steve Sumpter, daughter Vickie Sumpter, grandson Shawn Bond, and sisters, Merriam Smith, Rosalee Akerberg, and Cozette McCormick.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at 11:00 at Coffeyville First Assembly of God with Pastor Randy DePriest officiating. Masks and social distancing will be enforced.  Burial will immediately follow at Fairview Cemetery. A book signing will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 from 11:00am to 5:00pm at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. The family suggests memorials be made payable to the First Assembly of God and they may be sent in care of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel 2405 Woodland Ave. Coffeyville, KS 67337.
