Mary Scrogin

April 8, 1931 — January 8, 2023

Bella Vista, Arkansas longtime Coffeyville resident

Mary Scrogin

Mary Alice (Hulseman) Scrogin, a long-time Coffeyville, Kansas resident, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2023.  She passed peacefully in her sleep at the Apple Creek Nursing Home in Centerton, Arkansas where she had lived for the last 6 weeks. Prior to that, she lived with her son Larry Bowman and his wife Jan for the last year in Bella Vista, Arkansas.

Mary Alice was born to Geary J. and Opal I. (Woods) Hulseman on April 8, 1931, in Coffeyville, Kansas. She attended Coffeyville schools until her parents moved to Midwest City, Oklahoma. She attended and graduated from Midwest City High School where she played the clarinet in the school band and was a drum majorette in the marching band.  After high school she married Dale Allen Bowman and moved to Tacoma, Washington.  She and Dale divorced, and Mary moved back to Midwest City, then to Arkansas City, Kansas with her two sons to live with her mother.

In 1954 she married John E. Scrogin. In the spring of 1956, John moved the family back to Coffeyville, Kansas, where she lived until moving to Bella Vista.  Mary's first job outside of the home was as a registered x-ray technician at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.  She retired after 20 years then worked at the First National Bank of Coffeyville.  She finished her working career as a receptionist for Ford Wulf Bruns funeral home.

Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She never missed a school or sporting event that involved her children or grandchildren.  She was an accomplished seamstress, crocheted many afghan blankets, and painted several still life paintings with her acrylic paints.  Mary loved raising flowers and mowing the yard with her riding mower.  She enjoyed camping and made several trips to Branson, Missouri, with her girlfriends where they would do the "shop until they dropped" routine.  While living in Bella Vista next to a golf course, she could watch the golfers tee off, and said that she learned a whole new language from those golfers.

Soon after John Scrogin passed away in August of 1990, her full-time companion was a blonde cocker spaniel named Mandy.  During the time between John's passing and her own, she raised, cared for, and spoiled four cocker spaniels that she loved dearly.

Surviving to cherish Mary's memory are her two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Dianna Bowman of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Larry and Jan Bowman of Bella Vista, Arkansas. Additional survivors include five grandchildren, four step- grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband John E. Scrogin, her parents, her brother Geary Lee Hulseman, and her nephew Geary Lee Jr.

Funeral services for Mary Alice will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Ford Wulf Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave in Coffeyville, Kansas.  Pastor Matthew Friese of First Southern Baptist Church will be officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at the Ford Wolf Bruns Chapel from 6 to 8 pm.  The family has requested memorial contributions be made payable to Coffeyville Friends of Animals and may be left in care of the chapel.  Services will be streamed live under her obituary page t www.fordwulfbrunschapel.com where you may also leave an online condolence or share a memory with the family.
